DTL RECEIVES LEED GOLD CERTIFICATION

December 08, 2009
DTL - Digital Technology Laboratory
Chicago, Illinois, December 8, 2009 - Mori Seiki's Digital Technology Laboratory (DTL) achieved LEED® Gold certification for sustainable design of its recently-developed 71,000 square-foot laboratory and technical center in Davis, California. LEED® stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a green building rating system developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) in an effort to promote and recognize sustainable "green" design practices. This is the first private-sector building to achieve certification at this level in the City of Davis and Yolo County and one of only a few in the entire Sacramento region.

This $15M facility was completed in May of 2009 and includes some of the following sustainable features that were incorporated to reach the Gold level: energy-efficient fluorescent lighting with dimmable ballasts and motion detection, 172 kW photovoltaic system, extensive daylighting, lowflow plumbing fixtures, electric hand dryers, extensive use of materials from rapidly-renewable sources and low volatile-organic-compound glues (bamboo, cork), caulks and paints to improve indoor air quality, aggressive construction waste recycling (95%+) and high-efficiency air conditioning systems. In addition, bicycle racks for over 50 bikes and shower facilities were provided to encourage employees to consider alternate commuting methods in this bicycle - friendly city.

According to Adam Hansel, President of DTL, "The benefits of achieving LEED certification are far-reaching; the green design diminishes the use of natural resources and that results in positive environmental and fiscal effects over time."
